I was exploring willow as a building material for making a sculpture for my Fine Arts Masters show. On a walk on Chimney meadows, I came across a couple of beautiful weeping willows and I decided to start my work there. In my mind, I was thinking of a drop shape while weaving. After a few hours I needed to get back home so carried it back and got on a bus to Oxford. I then searched for local weeping willows so I could complete the form.
I had intended to insert a speaker into the form which would play the sounds of the river Wigwell (hydrophone recording) but instead decided to attach the speaker to the glass separating the indoors from the outdoors so the sound would bridge the gap. Chrysalis was exhibited in the Glass Tank gallery at Oxford Brookes University in June 2023 as part of my MFA degree show.
